1.2 Academic Support system

Ateneo De Naga Junior High School provides some facilities for the students and teachers for supporting the academic process. There are :

Academic Promotion

Students are promoted or retained according to the Policy Guidelines on Classroom Assessment for the K to 12 Basic Education Program, DepEd Order no. 8, s. 2015. A student who fails more than two subjects shall repeat the curriculum year. Only students promoted in all their subject are admitted to the next curriculum year, subject to the conditions for readmission.

1.4 Materials and other learning sources

At Ateneo De Naga Junior High School both teachers and students will have the lesson plan that will be used for a week. There are several topics in the lesson plan and the teacher also provides some worksheet and supporting material for each topic.

1.5 Measurement and Evaluation system

The school year of Ateneo De Naga Junior High School is divided into three grading periods, technically known as TERMS. At the end of each term, the students are individually rated according to their individual achievement of the objectives set for the term.

First TERM                   : June - August

Second TERM            : Sept - December

Third TERM                : January – March

1.6 Curriculum

The curriculum used by Ateneo De Naga Junior High School is the K+12 Program of the Department of Education. Students will learn some subjects.

There are eight subjects learned by the students.  

1. Values Education

2. English (Language and Literature)

3. Filipino (Language and Literature)

4. Mathematics

5. Araling Panlipunan (Social Studies)

6. Science (Gen. Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics)

7. MAPEH (Music, Art, Physical Education and Health)

1.7 Teaching Plan

Before doing observation and practicum in the class, the cooperating teacher, ma’am Sally, gives me a Lesson plan used for 7 grades. Lesson Plan of English in Ateneo De Naga University is made by English department teachers.  On my observation at ma’am Sally class (grade 7), the material taught by her was a pronoun. After doing observation on the 7,8 and 9 grade (12 sessions in total) ma’am Sally asked me to prepare three lesson plans for my practicum. The materials were about the simple present tense, past simple tense, and future simple tense. Ma’am sally asked me to make a lesson plan using Ateneo De Naga Junior High School format. She gave me a lesson plan about Past simple tense for the example.

Pedagogical Content

After I had done some observations in different grade classes and different grade, I will show you the Pedagogical contents in Ateneo De Naga Junior High School based on the result of my observation.

1.1 Teaching Method

Ma’am Lorie as the chairperson of the English Department gave me the schedule to do observation in some classes in different grades. After I did observation in 8 classes in total, I can conclude that almost of the teacher used students-center method when they teach the students. For the first time, the teachers do brainstorming to make the students think critically. In 7 grade I observed Ma’am sally class. Ma’am sally started the class with Motivation time, so one of the students will present a quotation in front of class and the student will explain it to his friends about the value in the quotation delivered by him. This activity can catch students attention before the lesson. After that, the teacher explained the material, in the learning process the teacher usually asked some question to the students, so it can be a strategy to appeal students attention and to know the understanding of the students after the teacher explaining the material. After that, the teachers gave some exercises and discussed it together (formative test).  At the end of the learning process, the teacher will ask the students to summarize the lesson that has been learnt today. After the teacher has given them a formative test, in the next meeting, the teacher will review the material in a short time. And the teacher will give a quiz for the students and summative test.

1.2 Learning materials and innovation

The teacher used Handbook and some websites like Grammarly website for the learning material. The teacher uses a projector and laptop for supporting the teacher when she is explaining the materials. The innovation used by the teacher is from the powerpoint made by the teacher and the strategies used by the teacher in the learning process. For example, The teacher teaches Beowulf’s boast about the geats thanes or warrior literature. For the first time, the teacher used Pre-discussion test. It is used to know the students understanding after they read the story. After the pre-discussion test had finished the teacher started discussed the answers with the students. This innovation made all of the students focus on the lesson because every question has a different score and they will get score if they can answer the question.

1.3 Source of Learning and Innovation

Every student is given a lesson plan by the teacher. The purpose is students can know what material they will learn today. Usually, the teacher will give them some paper related to the material that they will learn today. For the technology used in the learning process, the teacher used a laptop and projector. Both teachers and students are not allowed to use handphone in the class because it can disturb the learning process.

1.4 Authentic Assessment

After I did observation. I can conclude that there is two Authentic Assessment used by the teachers in Ateneo De Naga Junior High School, those were Formative assessment and summative assessment. Formative assessment is used during the learning process. The form of formative assessment is exercise, worksheet, and quiz. While Summative assessment is used after finishing the material. The summative assessment usually is used by the teacher after completing learning the whole topic. It is used by the teacher for knowing students understanding. The teacher will collect the students’ score from the formative and summative test to know the average students’ score.

Teaching Plan

1.1 Curriculum

The curriculum used by Ateneo De Naga Junior High School is the K+12 Program of the Department of Education. Students will learn some subjects. There are Filipino, English, Mathematics, Science, Araling Panlipunan, Computer, Music, Art, physical education, Value Education (religion), SRA(reading ) and health.

1.2 Teaching Plan

In my observation, for grade eight, the teacher teaches about argumentative essay and for grade nine, the teacher teach about English literature but most of the classes in grade seven are talking about the pronoun. After doing some observation my cooperating teacher asked me to make three lesson plans about simple present tense, simple past tense and simple future tense. I used the Ateneo De Naga Junior High School format when I make the lesson plans. For my final demo, ma’am sally as my cooperating teacher asked me to teach about simple future tense.

Teaching Practice

1.1 Procedure of Teaching

a. Motivation Time

Before starting teaching, there is a motivation time. The aim of motivation time is to get the students attention before learning process is begun. There is one student that will show a quote in front of the class and the student will explain the value she/he gets from the quote. After delivering the quote, I will add some value of the quote to the students.

b. Showing the objective of the lesson

Before explaining the material I will showing the objective of the lesson to students. I will ask a volunteer from the students to read the objective of the lesson and after that, I will explain to the students about the objective of the lesson.

c. Explaining the material

Because each period has a short time, I usually spend 15-20 minutes do explaining the materials. It also includes exercises. I use laptop and projector when I explain the material and I also used a game (board race game) for appealing students interest during the teaching process.

d. Short Exercise and Quiz

After doing exercises, I usually give short quiz for the formative test and quiz for the summative test. It helps me knowing the students understanding the material.

1.2 Time Management and Organizing activities

Every period has 55 minutes. It is too short for me for the first time doing my practicum because in Indonesia I usually teach for 90 minutes each period. In my first practicum, I have some difficulties in managing time and organizing activities in class. But fortunately, ma’am sally as my cooperating teacher always gives me some feedback about my performance while teaching a class. At the end of my practicum, I can manage 55 minutes well after applying ma’am sally feedback and suggestion.

1.3 Problem-Solving

In the class, both teacher and students are not allowed to use a phone in the class.  So during my teaching, I can not use the phone as the media of my teaching. So I solved the problem by using traditional media for my teaching (board and chalk). Although I have a problem because of this rule but I think using a phone can disturb the learning process and it can disturb the students’ focus. The second problem is I have 55 minutes per period for teaching. For the first time I have difficulties to manage this short time but Ma’am sally as my cooperating teacher always gives me her feedback and suggestion after finishing my teaching and it helps me a lot to manage the short time.

1.4 Classroom Management

In the classroom management, I use a clapping game to appeal to students’ interest before starting explaining the material. I usually ask the students to rearrange their chair and ask them to put their belonging below their chair. It makes the class tidier and the students can focus during the learning process. In classroom management, ma’am sally as my cooperating teacher gives a suggestion to use motivation time before I teach, so it can get their attention before the class started. For motivation time one of the students will read a quotation in front of the class and he/she will explain the value she/he gets from the quotation, and usually I will give an opportunity for other students to give their opinion about the quotation.

Summary and Suggestion

1.1 Purpose of Practicum

By joining this program I  can gain knowledge about the learning system and curriculum in the Philippines after doing observation and doing my practicum in the school. I also can develop my teaching skills and pedagogy, because my cooperating teacher always gives me some feedback and suggestion after doing practicum. And it encourages me to improve my teaching skill during this program. Not only improving my teaching skill but also improving my English skills (speaking and writing skill) when I join this program. Because during this program I have to use English as my first language and I also have to write a blog for telling my experience joining this program. I also learn about the culture of another country like the Philippines. It is great program for learning the culture of another country because I can live about 1 month in the Philippines and I can communicate and do some discussion with the Philippines people. For the result, I gain a broader regional and world view.

1.2 Procedures of Practicum

      A. Observation

Before I do my practicum. I have a week to do observation in the class. Ma’am sally as my cooperating teacher gives me a lesson plan of grade seven. It can help me during the observation in the class. I do my observation in the second week and I have 4 days doing my observation. I have 14 classes in total for during observation. For the first and second day, I observe grade seven, eight and nine. But in the third and fourth day, I observe just in the seven grade because I will do my practicum in the seven grade.

      B. Making Lesson Plan

My cooperating asked me to make 3 lesson plans that I will use in my practicum. I make the lesson plans using Ateneo de naga JHS lesson plan format given by my cooperating teacher. In the lesson plan, I have to highlight the objective of the lesson. The three lesson plan that I have to make are Present simple tense, past simple tense, and future simple plan. In the lesson plans, I also have to make some question for Formative test (exercise and worksheet) and Summative test(Quiz).  

      C. Teaching

I teach two classes each day. There are LG 7211 and LG 7213. Both of them are great classes because all of them always excited during the learning process in the class. In my first teaching activity, there is motivation time. The purpose of motivation time is to get students attention before learning the new material in the class. It usually spends 5 minutes. After that, I start explaining the material to the students. In my teaching, I use the students center method. During the learning process, I always interact with students by discussing the answer to the question given to me. All of the students are very excited during the learning process, they think critically about the reason behind their answer. I usually ask the question to the students and they not only give the correct answer but also give the reason why the answer is true and why the answer is false. It helps them to know and understand the concept of the material explain to me. At the end of my class I will give them a formative test for knowing their understanding of the material.

      D. Feedback

After doing a practicum, ma’am Sally as my cooperating teacher will give me some feedback and suggestion about my performance in the class and I usually implement the feedback and her suggestion for my next practicum. It helps me to know my weaknesses in my teaching. And I also learn some approaches for teaching after getting feedback and suggestion from my cooperating teacher.

1.3 Outcomes of Practicum

      1.Improving my English skills

By joining Sea-Teacher program, I can improve my English skills especially in my speaking skill, listening skill, and writing skill, because I use English every day both in the school and in the dormitory.

      2. Gaining new experiences in teaching

In this program, I learn a lot about teaching because I have to teach in a short time and I have to manage the short time wisely in my teaching. It is very different when I teach in my country because I have a long time to teach my students. And by this program, I have learned the different method used by the teacher while teaching the student. And hopefully, I can implement the method I got during this program when I teach students in my country.

       3. Learning the culture in the school

There is interesting culture in the school that I have learned. First the flag ceremony. The flag ceremony in the school is very short. It is very different from a flag ceremony in my country because usually, it will spend 1 hour. The second is the politeness of the students. I realize that in school that I do my practicum, all of the students will greet me when they meet me.

    4. Learning the culture of the Philippines

Sea-Teacher program gives me an opportunity to know more about the culture in the Philippines. In the Philippines, I have some opportunities to know and see some event and celebration in the Philippines like Pasungko Ina. I also can know the traditional food of the Philippines and I learn how to make Philippines food.

1.4 The Challenges of Practicum

The first problem is teacher and students are not allowed to used phone in the class, so I cannot use the phone as the media in my teaching because the rule but I have changed with a projector so this problem can be solved.   The second problem is lack connection in the school, so I cannot browsing on the internet using laptop for preparing the next lesson. This problem also can be solved by me by preparing all of the lesson that I will teach 3 days before I teach.

1.5 Overall Impression

From my view, Sea-Teacher program is a great program for the pre-service student teacher to gaining new experience in teaching. I as the pre-service student teacher can improve my teaching skill and the knowledge about another curriculum applied in another country. Sea-Teacher program also gives an opportunity to explore and learn about the culture in another country and it can help the students to gain a broader regional. This program also makes the sea-teacher participant be more mature because they have experienced some problems experienced in another country and they can solve the problem.

1.6 Suggestion for future Improvement

For the next SEA-Teacher participant, It will be good if she/he knows earlier about the curriculum applied in the school and the material that he/she will teach because sometimes the material will be different in another country. It can make them do well in teaching performance. And before going abroad, hopefully, they can check the weather in the country so they can prepare for the bad weather.
